Replacement of old R22 units

In less than three years from now any R22-based air conditioning system will become impossible to repair because the last-resort solution of topping up with virgin or recycled/recovered fluid will be against the law.

Even if the system is repairable without loss of refrigerant it may no longer be possible to find the necessary spares: manufacturers have been slowly running down stocks of the essential items because they will be no longer needed.

Although it will not be illegal to continue to operate an existing R22 system, its performance will be well below current expectations in terms of energy efficiency.

So says Mike Nankivel of Daikin distributor Space Air in the United Kingdom who suggests that now is the time to replace old R22 units before critical breakdown happens.
