EU biomass production is insignificant

The European Union (EU) may need to double its biomass production if member states are to reach renewable energy targets, according to Eurelectric, the trade association for Europe's electricity industry.

Current production stands at around 82 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) but if member states achieve their National Renewable Energy Action Plans then this will increase to between 146 and 158 Mtoe by 2020.

Eurelectric estimates that 120 Mtoe could be produced from within the EU by that point, leaving a gap of around 25-40 Mtoe. While this shortfall could be filled by imports, availability and costs could be damaged if other major countries boost their use of biomass also.
