Collaboration between nine companies in Spain has set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions to the tune of one million tonnes between them all through improving energy efficiency.

Spearheaded by utility company Endesa, the other companies forming the Energy Efficiency Platform come from different business sectors, and include: Cemex, CEPSA, Meliá Hotels International, Philips Ibérica, Renfe, Telefónica, Toyota España and Unibail Rodamco España.

The Platform will develop joint initiatives aimed at improving energy efficiency for both the companies themselves and their end customers.

The nine companies have confirmed their commitment to energy efficiency and reducing emissions by setting a target of saving one million tonnes of CO2 between them all. This is approximately equal to the emissions of 200,000 average Spanish households a year.

Their concern and their duty of contributing initiatives focusing on energy efficiency has led the partners to agree on reducing CO2 in their productive assets as a first step in helping to meet Spain's and the European Union's commitments as included in the Action Plan for Energy Savings and Efficiency 2011-2020 (reducing emissions by 20 percent, obtaining 20 percent of energy consumption from renewable sources and improving energy efficiency by cutting energy consumption by 20 percent).
