After one of the most challenging projects ever handled by Grundfos, 10 enormous fire pumps have now shipped to an Oil Refining company in Abu Dhabi.
One of the world’s largest engineering, procurement and construction companies, Samsung Engineering in Korea, chose in 2010 Grundfos as the supplier of 10 vertical fire pumps, which were a part of the expansion of Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER). The order is the largest fire pump project ever handled by Grundfos. Therefore it was a challenging project in which many new solutions were invented.
- It is a fantastic project and the customer has specified only the best equipment with vertical turbine pumps in super duplex stainless steel. It is an enormous and amazing piece of engineering, which we can be proud of, says Director of International Engineered Business Development, Sonny Ogunseye.
Each pump weighs 13,000kgs, is 20.3 metres long and 5.2 metres wide and because it is made of super duplex stainless steel it can handle sea water. In the case of fire, the 10 diesel driven, UL and FM approved, vertical fire pumps and other parts of the complete system will protect the Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company which handles about 400,000 barrels of oil per day.
Now that the pumps have been shipped, President of Grundfos Indianapolis, Andrew Warrington explains that the process has been especially good due to the teamwork needed to make it a success.
- The key to success was that sales and operations have worked closely together as one team throughout the long period of this order. I am very satisfied with the result and I am confident that this is the first of many more large orders for the fire pump market, he says.

In addition he also states that the learning from the project has given both Grundfos Indianapolis and the Engineered Systems group at Grundfos Houston a big confidence boost.

- With this order we have proven to the world, once again, that we excel at large projects. This is further proof that after nearly 90 years in the fire protection business that we are no doubt a world leader when it comes to large, challenging projects, Warrington added.
