Building energy efficiency key to sustainable development
The UN Sustainable Energy for All initiative aims to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030.
Energy efficient buildings are key to achieving the UN Sustainable Energy for All initiative because they align economic, social, and environmental objectives which are all bottom-line benefits.
The problem is that the pace and amount of improvement in energy efficiency upgrades and new construction falls short of achieving the goal of transforming buildings into generators of these benefits.
The outcome of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference was a document adopted by all countries titled The Future We Want. The group recognized that improved energy efficiency along with increased share of renewable energy, and cleaner and energy-efficient technologies are important for sustainable development, including addressing climate change.
