In a recent effort designed to avoid the financial ‘fiscal cliff’, President Obama signed legislation to keep tax rates from increasing for tax paying Americans. Along with many other tax provisions, the bill reinstates the 25C tax credits for highly efficient water heating and HVAC equipment. These tax credits expired in 2011, but they have been extended from January 1, 2012 until December 31, 2013 to include all qualified equipment listed in section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code. These credits can be applied to qualified equipment that was installed any time after December 31, 2011.

Examples of Tax Qualified Equipment:
Qualified water heaters receive a $300 tax credit. These water heaters include electric heat pump water heaters with an energy factor of 2.0 or greater and propane, natural gas, and oil water heaters that have an energy factor of at least 0.82 or a thermal efficiency of 90 percent or greater. Natural gas, propane and oil furnaces and boilers with an AFUE of 95 or greater receive a $150 tax credit. Qualified air conditioners and heat pumps that achieve the highest efficiency CEE tier as of January 1, 2009 receive a $300 tax credit. This includes split system air conditioners with a 16 SEER and a 13 EER and packaged central air conditioners with a 14 SEER and a 12 SEER. Qualified heat pumps include split system electric heat pumps with an 8.5 HSPF, 12.5 EER and a 15 SEER as well as packaged electric heat pumps with an 8.0 HSPF, 12 EER and a 14 SEER. Advanced main air circulating fans used in natural gas, propane or oil furnaces with an annual electricity use of 2 percent or less of the total energy use of the furnace receive a $50 tax credit.

Comfort Control, Inc. is a Gwinnett HVAC company. They have been providing residents of Gwinnett County Georgia and the surrounding areas with heating and air services since 1992. They specialize in heating repair, AC repair as well as installations and maintenance. Tom Kohberger, owner of Comfort Control, Inc. is pleased to hear about these extended tax credits. “After years of repairing and installing furnaces, air conditioners and other HVAC systems, I’m happy to see some incentives for using high efficiency units. These systems require less energy which lowers power bills and is better for the environment. It’s great to see the government pushing green technologies.”
