Future prospects for hydrocarbons

The hazards of hydrocarbon refrigerants have been greatly exaggerated, says an Australian air conditioning equipment manufacturer Pioneer International. They point to the doubts that accompanied the introduction of R410A in the early 1990s because of the much higher operating pressures, but it subsequently became an industry standard. The argument for adopting HCs is basically price and performance. Pioneer report tests on a range of R410A ducted, inverter-driven air conditioning units which they converted to hydrocarbons and found energy savings averaging 25% (range 17-38%). Lower compressor load also reduced wear and tear.
